RESUMO

Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, popularly known as "Pink pepper", is a plant native to Brazil. The objective of this work was to analyze the chemical composition and the antioxidant and antibacterial potential of essential oils (EOs) from the leaves, fruits and twigs of S. terebinthifolius, aiming for their application in food safety. EOs were obtained by hydrodistillation and the chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Phenolic compounds were quantified and antioxidant activity was evaluated using three different methods. The antibacterial activity was determined by the broth microdilution method against foodborne bacteria. In the chemical analysis, 22 compounds were identified in the leaves, 13 compounds in the fruits and 37 compounds in the twigs, revealing the presence of the main compounds germacrene D (12.04%, 15.78%, 20,41%), caryophyllene (15.97%, 3.12%, 11.73%), α-pinene (11.6%, 17.16%, 2.99%), ß-pinene (5.68%, 43.34%, 5.60%) and γ-gurjunene (16,85%, 3,15%) respectively. EOs showed better antioxidant potential using the ß-carotene/linoleic acid method with 40.74, 61.52 and 63.65% oxidation inhibition for leaves, fruits and twigs, respectively. The EO from the leaves showed greater antibacterial potential against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.62 mg mL-1, a value lower than the MIC of sodium nitrite (5.00 mg mL-1), the antimicrobial standard synthetic. The activities of pink pepper EOs suggest their potential as a biopreservative in foods.

The incorporation of plant-based extracts into polymer-based coatings is an efficient alternative to increase the shelf-life of stored fruit and to decrease or even prevent bacterial growth. Considering strawberries, it is also important to preserve their high antioxidant activity. Hence, this work evaluated the efficiency of a coating based on native cassava starch (NCS), gelatin, and sorbitol, containing different concentrations of Tetradenia riparia extract, in delaying the ripening process of strawberries stored under refrigerated conditions, and in preventing bacterial growth and antioxidant activity losses. Both concentrations of extract (500 or 1000 µg mL-1) increased the thickness, opacity, and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the films when compared to the film without extract, but decreased the solubility. Even though the film without extract was expected to create a more efficient barrier to the coated fruits, the films containing the extract led to similar results of soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), and vitamin C. Nevertheless, the extract incorporation improved the control over bacterial growth, and preserved the high antioxidant activity of the strawberries within ten days of storage.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of propolis extract against yeasts Candida albicans and Candida non-albicans isolated from vaginal exudates, in comparison with nystatin. DESIGN: Ninety-seven (97) vaginal yeasts strains were evaluated. These strains were obtained from different clinical conditions, isolated and stored at the Sector of Medical Mycology of the State University of Maringá (Paraná, Brazil). The assays of susceptibility to nystatin and propolis extracts (PE) were conducted through microdilution in broth (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards-NCCLS, M-27A Document of 1997). RESULTS: All the yeasts tested were inhibited by low concentrations of PE (maximum of 393.19 mug/mL of the total flavonoid content), including an isolate resistant to nystatin, regardless of the clinical conditions of the women and the species of yeast isolated. CONCLUSIONS: The PE showed an outstanding performance against the tested vaginal yeast strains, and could be included among the novel therapeutic options for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis.
